Project title 1

Reciprocal Restoration through Education and Practical Implementation

We acknowledge the seriousness of our times, the increasing destruction of our natural ecosystems, the pollution poisoning our soils and oceans, destruction of natural habitat and loss of biodiversity, climate injustice and polarisation of the privileged, empowered minority over the exploited majority.

We embrace the opportunity to play a positive part in reconciling humans and nature- to act from our deep belonging in service of the Earth, our home.

What is Reciprocal Restoration?

Reciprocal Restoration is a term I am using to describe a phenomena that I have personally experienced and observed in diverse settings.

When we start to restore an ecosystem (through gardening, ecosystem restoration, ocean cleanups, composting, volunteering in our communities, etc) in turn, our relationship with that particular ecosystem improves- we become aware of our interconnectedness to this “outer” ecosystem, and through playing a positive role, we gain confidence and, in many cases, a process of reconciliation with the natural world occurs. During this reconciliation with the outer world, a deeper, inner restoration begins to ocurr. It can seem like as we restore nature, nature is restoring us. Through acting on behalf of nature, we recover a sense of belonging, purpose and place.

I believe that this reciprocity can happen the other way around too. For those who enter into self study process´, Nature Connection, Deep Ecology, Ecopsychology, Sytems Theory, Dreamwork etc. a better understanding of who we truly are is reached, and as we come to the realisation that we are part of an intricate, intelligent, interconnected system, often referred to as The Web of Life, we realise our intrinsic belonging to nature, and we begin to act from this new worldview. Our actions appear to be guided by the desire for balance in the greater whole and the willingness to restore, reform, maintain and care for our natural ecosystems increases. I can be seen that as we restore ourselves, our natural environments begin to be respected, regenerated, and restored simultaneously.

Values, Vision, Mission

We are passionate about education that makes a difference! We offer programs and collaborate on projects that empower participants to discover and connect to their own, individual strengths through hands-on learning, practical applications and process work.

Nature Connection:
Restoring our relationship to nature and self
Activism:
Responding practically through hands-on learnings and implementations that have tangible outcomes on the ground
Cooperation:
Designing to include maximum collaboration, mutual support and active participation
Diversity:
Valuing our differences and creating resilience
Creativity:
Tapping into both sides of the brain to access new solutions

Meet Kate

Kate is passionate about nature, education, Permaculture, food gardens and forests! From 2013 -2017 she co- founded Soil*Sun*Soul- an educational organisation that runs international agro-ecological trainings. She has co-facilitated numerous Permaculture Design Courses, as well as Sustainable Food Production workshops and Soil Management training for International Voluntary Service for Climate Justice and Soil4Life. She has designed and implemented practical land regeneration projects in Spain and was a long-term volunteer/resident at Gaia Ashram, Thailand, where she still participates and facilitates in Ecovillage Design Education trainings. Kate feels strongly that all restoration is reciprocal- as we start to heal ourselves, we will naturally wish to act in a healing way towards the Earth, and as we work in restoring ecological ecosystems, we come to a restorative relationship with ourselves and others. She works with Deep Ecology and The Work that Reconnects to facilitate these restorative process´.

She recently returned to South Africa to collaborate at a community in the Garden Route. She believes a new, beautiful story is possible, if we actively engage in creating it!
